Fascism gains power during times of profound crisis, like 9/11, global warming, immigration, economic devastation, and political instability.

It takes advantage of popular disillusionment with democracy (which is always challenged) and offers simple solutions to complex issues with the promise of a return to national glory.

Democratic institutions remove all limitations on leader’s authority. SCOTUS giving Trump immunity on committing crimes while in office, for example.

They use fear, violence, and propaganda to intimidate and exploit others for power and control.

Racial focus and scapegoating on other classes and ethnicities. Think Jim Crow, slavery, KKK, genocide of indigenous people, fierce opposition to each wave of immigration in the US.

What you lose: Individual and political rights and freedoms, economic security, public education, culture, religious freedom, free speech and press.

What you gain: Government surveillance and control, extreme and rigid social roles, more persecution of minorities, more violence and conflict, decline in standard of living, corporate control.
